This book series is set in a time where mankind already travels the stars. In order to get around the enormous burden of traveling long distances, they pass through strange objects of unknown origin. Here traveling from one star to another can take days to weeks, depending on the gravitational pull of the objects within the star system. The story focuses on three main characters: John Ocreath Nickel (the pilot), Elisabeth Dia Gianni (the medic) and the mysterious Professor that takes them on a crazy expedition. During the tale’s progression the tensions begin to rise as they get further entangled with the Professor’s secrets and checkered past. The antagonists become stronger, smarter and determined as the story continues, and the main characters have to watch many of the people they meet suffer for just being within their proximity.
The main goal of this story is to show how dark a person’s life can become when they act out of desperation. Thus, there are many instances where deep shame and regret will be experienced by our main characters. It fits well with our theme of exploring human mortality and how fear and love contribute greatly to how a person is defined and redefined over time.
